What is the Lambeth Community College?
The Lambeth Community College is Lambeth's Virtual School for the Lambeth Looked After children. It is not a school in the physical sense, but rather an organisation - a group of people who will champion the needs of the Lambeth looked after children and young people.
How did the college come about?
The Virtual Schools generally and in our case, the Lambeth Community College, came about as a means to raise the achievement and attainment of looked after children. At a national level a disproportionate number of looked after children underachieve in the educational system. National and local statistics demonstrate an unacceptable level of under performance for these children compared to their peers.
What is the key?
The Lambeth Community College team will play a strategic role in improving standards of educational achievement for our looked after children and young people in Lambeth and other authorities across the country by engaging with key personnel on a broad spectrum of issues.
How?
- Working with designated teachers and headteachers to ensure each child has an ambitious and challenging Personal Education Plan.
- Working with agencies to ensure continuity of schooling.
- By providing additional, personalised support through one to one tuition.
The Personal Education Plan (PEP) - What does this mean now?
There are two points about how the PEP will develop through the Lambeth Community College:
- The Lambeth Community College will be adopting the new Pan London PEP pro-forma. The new format allows all personnel working with looked after children to work together to set challenging targets for pupils in line with the National Curriculum and P.levels guidance, agree the strategies which will support the children and young people to achieve, and a timescale to review the pupils progress.
- The Lambeth Community college team intend to accompany social care colleagues to set the targets and discuss educational progress.
- To discuss the appropriate ways for the looked after children and young people to access additional support.
How else will the Lambeth Community College support children and young people?
As with all schools, The Lambeth Community College relies on collecting and analysing data to assess pupil progress. In this way the college can work with schools to set targets. The college will be collecting progress data once a year, through the PEP and through collecting end of year data from schools.
Also, the college understands that there will be times when the looked after pupils experience difficulties in their lives. The team at the Lambeth Community College aim to support the looked after children and young people to remain in their school placements.
Working together
This year the College intends to support the PEPs for years 4, 6, 7,9,11. The aim is for a member of the team to work with schools, carers and social care colleagues to support the children and young people in those year groups to achieve and attain and in the case of the transition years to move from primary school to secondary school successfully and for young people to make appropriate choices through the 14-19 agenda.
