4.2.1 Risk Assessment Checklist for Lambeth Social Workers (Officers) Undertaking Work Outside the Jurisdiction of the UK |
Introduction
| 1. | Aims and Objectives |

| To ensure staff undertaking work outside of the jurisdiction of the UK on business on behalf of The London Borough of Lambeth (LBL) is appropriately supported. The relevant Head of Service for the social worker (Officer) travelling will ensure the following areas are considered and completed: |

| 2. | Flights, Hotels and Travel |
|
| 2.1 | Officers should, where possible ensure flights and accommodation are booked in advance through Lambeth following agreement of costs by the relevant Assistant Director. Please contact the admin manager CYPS nbrown@lambeth.gov.uk for further advice for making a booking. | |
| 2.2 | Officers should travel in fully insured taxis when abroad, unless car hire through a reputable care hire company is appropriate and agreed. Costs should be agreed with the relevant Assistant Director prior to travelling. | |
| 3. | The management of Health & Safety at work Regulations requires the employer to provide the employee with the comprehensive and relevant information on: | |
| 3.1 | The risk to health and safety identified by the assessment | |
| 3.2 | The preventative and protective measures in place to eliminate/reduce the risk | |
| 3.3 | The procedures in place for serious and imminent danger | |

| 3.5 | Staff travelling should be fully involved in the risk management process and once the assessments have been completed the findings should be signed off at the Directorate level. | |
| 3.6 | First Aid training may be appropriate for staff who are to visit areas where medical care may be restricted in case of an emergency. | |
| 3.7 | Cash handling risks may be present and staff may be encouraged to use credit or debit cards when abroad and reclaim expenses through payroll with appropriate receipts. Where travellers checks are not used and any substantial cash is taken use of a hotel safe should be applied. | |
| 4. | Officers: Should have all appropriate vaccinations & health information before travelling. Advice is available from: NHS website | |
| 4.1 | There is a personal responsibility for officers to discuss their health needs with their own GP as appropriate. | |
| 5. | Communication: All staff should have access to a phone and should inform their line manager of the hotel phone number where they are staying. Officers should be assured that their mobile phones are operational overseas. assessment activities e.g. exercises and case studies | |

| 7. | Payment: Staff will review their normal pay when working abroad but will be able to recoup TOIL to be agreed with the relevant head of Service for work undertaken. | |
